Happy New Year!

DW: Skeptical Clara

Well, it's been months since I updated. Whoops. I hope everyone had very happy holidays, and I wish you all the best for 2013.

I typically haven't done resolutions, but this year I do have some goals.
1. Create more than I consume: I don't blog as often as I want, and it's just due to my own laziness. I want to post at least once a week on my LJ and WP blogs. I read a lot of other sites, and I want to participate as a creator again.

2. NEW JOB: I still don't have a real job with benefits and vacation. I need this desperately.

3. Get in shape: I need to lose about 20-25 lbs. I want to eat healthier, get toned, and work on my flexibility.

4. Try to stay positive: I've already been working on this, but I want to be more conscious of what I say and how much I complain about things. I'm happier when I don't whine, and I know other people are too.

So yeah. I hate that I haven't posted more, and my LJ has lapsed out of paid status for the first time in YEARS, but if I get back into the swing of things, I'll probably renew it.

To Do for D*C

DW: Skeptical Clara
The only new costumes I'm bringing to Dragon*Con are Arena Katniss (1 or 2 versions) and my Rave Twilight Sparkle. I just wasn't really excited about anything or inspired to do something new. Oh well, it happens.

So I'm going to be bringing:
- Katniss
- Rave Twilight Sparkle
- Menace
- Black Gold Saw (hopefully I can fix my sword and FINALLY add the skull to the top!)
- Catwoman
- Dr. Girlfriend (maybe. I need to remake the hat--it got crushed at Anime Expo.)

I might bring my Knuckledragger Dress get-up, too, or something else I haven't worn in a while. If I had time, I'd re-do my Jasmine wig and wear the pretty version of that costume since I've never worn it before.

Here's what I have left to do:

Katniss
- Refinish arrows
- Make more arrows (about 4 more should be fine)
- Style wig
- Finish Version 2 jacket
- Learn & practice FX makeup for Version 2

Twilight Sparkle
- Make vest for underneath corset. (I'm going to use the same pattern as my Knuckledragger dress, so it shouldn't be too difficult.)
- Pick alternate shoes. (The ballet flats I've been wearing with it aren't comfy at all.)

Menace & Gold Saw
- Do a once-over and repair stuff that got messed up on the way back from AX.

OH AND I'm making pony ears. Bill cleaned up my original sculpt (it looks like a completely different ear, it's amazing!) and I've been learning how to make molds and do castings. I need to re-sculpt the alicorn horn, but my unicorn horn is being sanded (Bill is the best ever) so I can make a mold and start doing slush casts of it.

I could have sworn that I blogged in May... whoops.

A lot has happened since I last posted.. just like always. I moved to a new apartment after our lease ended, and I really enjoy it so far. I've got an apartment to myself, and I actually have an extra (small) bedroom, so that means I have an office/sewing room! I haven't worked on any big projects yet, but I've hemmed some jeans, fixed a swimsuit strap, and turned a t-shirt into a tote bag. I still have three or four Hunger Games quivers to make, so I really need to get on that soon. I'll be paying $1000 in rent and Bar dues this week, so I really need the extra cash.

I never quite recovered financially from missing a week to move and go to Savannah, and I'm about to miss another week and a half going to Anime Expo. I might have to ask my parents for a loan to get me through next week, but I hate to do that. :(

I'm finally feeling okay today. I spent the day observing a trial, and about halfway through I started getting a horrible headache. By the time I finished in court and got a haircut, I was so nauseated that I wasn't sure if I could make it home without stopping. I took an advil and a nap, so I feel a lot better. I have a ton do to tomorrow (and tonight, too, technically...) and I can't afford to feel crappy.

Anyway, I'm going to Anime Expo and Disneyland starting Wednesday, and I'm really excited, money problems not withstanding. I'm nervous, because I'm not in great shape and I can't bring my cool costume props, and I have no idea what to expect from this con. I just need not to freak out--I'll have fun!

Okay, I'm going to watch an episode of Eureka and do my nails and then probably get ready for bed.
Audrey: Cigarette
My first week of 2012 has been pretty productive. I've gotten back into yoga again, and I've gotten back into blogging for the Knoxville law firm again. I've also started looking for new jobs and plan to meet with my supervisor tomorrow (or later this week) to discuss my moving on and possibly finding another job within Equifax.

Of course, that comes off of two horrible days at work where my boss (I have two bosses and an overall supervisor) was horrible and bitchy. BUT I'm still making my numbers and doing well, and that's really all I care about.

Friday night, I had an allergic reaction to... something. I didn't eat anything odd or new, and I didn't use any different skin or hair product, but I started breaking out around 6pm and it got progressively worse until I found some Benadryl around midnight. I was broken out from head to toe in hives--half my face was broken out, and my lip was swollen. I was able to get some sleep but when I woke up on Saturday, the rash was still there. So I spent two hours of my New Year's Eve morning at the ER. They put me on a steroid and told me to take Benadryl, and I got the name of an allergist in town, but that was scary. I'm a lot better now, but I need to go to a doctor and see if he thinks I should do allergy testing. This is the 2nd time I've broken out like this in the past 6 months, I've never been allergic to anything before, and this most recent breakout was the worst yet (my tongue started to get numb and my throat started to swell while I was at the ER), so I feel like allergy testing would be worth it to avoid another ER trip. :\

New Year's Eve night was a blast, though. Bill and I went to Jimmy and Brandi's house for food, fireworks, and movies. They had a bunch of people over, and we all brought food to grill and snacks to share; it was one of my best New Year's Eves ever.

I'm trying to put together a list of costumes for this year, but I'm not really excited about anything new or recent. I want to fix/finish/redo Black Gold Saw, especially now that the Black Rock Shooter anime is going to come out, I want to finish Menace, and I think I'd like to repair or make a new Catwoman catsuit. My big project, though, is going to be the Breakfast at Tiffany's gown. I've been wanting to make that for so long, and I think that this year would be a good year to do it.

Some people back home have talked about putting together new SW costumes, but that'll be in the planning stages for me this year. I think I want to do a Biker Scout, especially since Ryan made me some of the pieces for Christmas one year, and I just won't have the money to complete one this year. My goal for the TB will probably be to find the pieces I have, plan and budget out the project, maybe buy some base pieces, and start talking to TBs in Midsouth about getting armor.

Happy Holidays!

DW: Skeptical Clara
I hope everyone had a Merry Christmas!

I had a busy weekend, so I haven't really been online until today. On Saturday, I drove to Chattanooga for Christmas with my family. I've gotten some good Sneaky Santa (Dirty Santa/White Elephant/etc.) presents over the past couple of years, so it was about time for me to get something silly or inappropriate for me. I ended up with some MANLY lotion and body wash, but my dad ended up with a pedicure set (including one of those "too lazy to wash my feet" sandals), so we traded.

My grandmother gave me a pretty cardigan and cami that I can wear to work, and I got cash from my aunt and my grandfather.

Saturday night, I drove to Nashville. I had a great Christmas from my parents. I got a bunch of gift cards, a Hello Kitty ornament, a huge Hello Kitty make-up palette, a check (which I'm saving), Philosophy "Gingerbread Girl" and Snow Angel body wash, and a bunch of other stuff. ^_^

Bill got me a tablet for Christmas--an Acer Iconia Tab a100. I love it. He also got me the Companion Cube cookie jar. Now I have an excuse to bake cookies!

Unfortunately, one of my co-workers gave me a nasty cold. I started getting a sore throat on Sunday, but wasn't sure if I was sick or if my throat was strained from talking so much. Alas, I spent all day yesterday lying in bed and sleeping. I postponed going to Georgia until tomorrow--I was supposed to go today--so I'll only have 2 days of work under my belt this week, but really? I don't care. It sucks that my paycheck next week will be tiny (or nonexistent), but I don't want to go to work sick. I don't want to drive five hours to GA while I'm sick. I'd rather sleep it all off now and get better instead of being sick for the next month.

But in spite of my stupid cold, I had a great Christmas. Hopefully I'll be well enough this weekend to do something fun for New Year's!

Dragon*Con 2011

DW: Skeptical Clara
I got back from D*Con yesterday afternoon. Had a great year, but it went by so quickly! I missed all the concerts I wanted to see (JoCo and Freezepop and Cruxshadows) and only went to one panel––the Venture Bros panel. It was a great panel, though, and I'm glad I went!

I'm not sure I'm up for a full day-by-day post, but I'd like to make some notes of things to remember next year.

My pictures are on Flickr and Facebook. Here's the flickr link: Dragon*Con 2011

- Make a sleep schedule: I feel like if I make a schedule for sleeping I'll be less stressed out all weekend. I can't do everything, and I need to accept that and take a nap.

- Watch the Parade, don't march in it: Marching almost killed me. I was exhausted (from getting little to no sleep) and so dehydrated that I ended up missing photo shoots afterwards. :(

- Wear costumes for more than an hour at a time: I wore Queen's Blade for two or three hours on Friday, but only managed to stay in Black Gold Saw for about an hour and a half. I think that was due mainly to the annoyance of having claws and knee-spikes that got in my way, and a wig that kept getting tangled up in my fingers and zipper.

- Fireball Whiskey is wonderful. (I need to remember that for every other con ever. hehe.)

- Take MOAR pictures, and be in more of my own pictures. I took about 130, but I really tried to be a good little photographer. I'd like to take more pics next year.

- Walk around more downstairs. I always feel like I miss out on some of the best costumes, and I feel like I spend a lot of time in my room. More than I need to...

- Play Werewolf!

Costume Notes/Thingies:
- Only 1 person recognized "Countrycide" Gwen. As such, I have no pictures of it other than the one I have of me and Flat Ryan. I knew it was kind of a random costume, and I didn't think many people would get it, but I'm glad someone did. And I'm glad it's not a high-maintenance costume. It was probably the most comfortable thing I wore all weekend. (SO MANY POCKETS!)

- Finding a wall for the Queen's Blade group to lean up against was a necessity. ProTip: Contrary to popular belief, you don't have the right to take pictures of my ass w/o my permission, you creepy asshole. Don't be surprised if I throw someone's phone across the Atrium next year.

- I need to suck it up and make a new catsuit. I honestly don't think I'll wear Catwoman again until I get one. :(

- My Dr. Girlfriend wig was all messed up. I need to remember how the bangs are supposed to look before I put it on. That was probably my favorite costume of the weekend, though. I missed doing groups with my friends, and Venture Bros is a perfect group to do because you can ham it up and be silly the whole time.

- Bazookas are awesome. (And surprisingly light!)

- I need to make some cute dresses for next year to wear around.

Costume Progress

DW: Skeptical Clara
This is the closest I've ever been to not finishing stuff for Dragon*Con. Here's what I have left:

Black Gold Saw
- Glue 1 piece onto claws
- Sew tights together
- Attach belt loops to shorts
- Attach stars to jacket sleeve
- Finish Leg armor
- Boots
- Stick craft foam to headband ear-pieces

Menace
- Glue crown together
- Make under-top
- Assemble leather top
- Hem skirt
- Attach snaps to bottom
- Make linen wrap

So except for making the top of my Menace costume, everything is pretty minor. I can do it! Especially since I won't have a job before D*C... -_-;;;

Ready for this exam to be over. It's so weird to think that weeks of work will culminate in 12 hours of testing.

Applied for a job in Nashville. It's with the General Assembly, and is really one of the only jobs I'd consider moving back to Nashville for. I REALLY don't want to move back, but if I have an offer, I'd be stupid not to accept. The thought of having to be apart from Bill is too much to think about right now, but it might be necessary. I'll deal with that if it arises.

Saw Captain America tonight. Loved it. Loved Chris Evans, I love Cap, and it was just a perfect movie.

Got a lot of costume work done this weekend. My claws are done except for ONE PIECE and some clean-up work. I started Menace--cut out the collar pieces and the scales. The scales are ready for color--they've been wet-formed and the edges are finished. Bill repainted my horns, and they're gorgeous. He glazed some of my armor, and it actually worked, so I get to start painting soon. I think I might be able to pull this all off...

So ready for this exam to be over. Ugh. Tomorrow I'm going to look over stuff, but try not to stress out about it. If I pass, yay! If I don't, I can try again in February. It happens. I've studied as much as I could stand.

Okay. Bedtime. Finally feeling sleepy.

New Blogging Client = Nightmare

IT'S A TRAP (Megara)
So last week another lawyer––one in Atlanta––hired me to blog for him. I was excited at first, but then he explained to me his blogging process, and I started to feel uneasy. This lawyer will scour the web for other blog posts about probate, corporations, etc., re-write them, and post them to his own blog. He doesn't link back to the original author, he doesn't comment on what they say, he just does a straight re-write "so Google doesn’t know.” That's an exact quote, btw.

Now, most of his posts are factual law dumps––this is what constructive trusts are, this is why you need to renew your corporation, etc.––but that still doesn't make it any less sleazy to me. His justification is that it's just not possible to come up with original content anymore.

Another big problem is that he's made it to the first page of Google, which is apparently the BEST ACHIEVEMENT EVER to him, and because he's figured out SEO, he thinks he knows everything about blogging. Which he obviously fucking doesn't, or he wouldn't be plagiarizing other people's posts. He especially wouldn't tell people he's plagiarizing other people's posts as if there's nothing wrong with that.

He wants to start a company that blogs for the legal profession--which is exactly what I want to do--and he's said he might consider me for the company. But I don't want to work with this guy. I don't want to be involved in a company that steals from other people. As a blogger, and a wannabe-IP lawyer, I am NOT okay with doing that.

He's cheap––very concerned about how much work I do a week, even though I'm only charging him $12.50/hr. And he's been telling me he's going to call me this week and asking for my availability. I've told him that I'm available after 4 because I have class and need to study for the Bar, and every day he's said he's going to call, I've made time to talk to him. (Last week, he kept me on the phone for about two hours––he has no family, and I think he's lonely, but I'm not getting paid to be his friend!) And both times this week, he hasn't called me. This morning he e-mailed me again, asking to talk to me "mid to early afternoon" and generally sounding frustrated that he hasn't been able to reach me.

Well that's not my fucking fault. He's the one who hasn't called me. He KNOWS I'm studying for the Bar, and I've told him my availability with plenty of notice. So that's pissing me off, on top of the blatant plagiarism I'm supposed to be engaging in. BUT I need the money. Especially if I want to stay in Atlanta, I need the money to pay for expenses and get some experience... at least until I find a steady job.

This guy has all the blogging know-how of the Doctor whose blog I'm managing (which is to say, none), but he's gotten to the first page of Google so he thinks he's hot shit. I just don't know how much longer I can do this. And I've only been doing it for a week. :\
